I, ME AND MYSELF

Man is intrigued by the simplest of things as a child- he solves puzzles, wants to know how the leaf on the stays there is called and how birds sit on railway wires yet not get a shock. He grows up to ask more and more questions and as he reaches adulthood, is faced with the biggest question of all- “WHO AM I?” The “I” in the sentence holds for him a very significant value. The “I” means the world to him.

He goes about the world in a meaning to that “I”- he mingles with kinds in whom he sees it reflected, he does things which give him the feeling of having fulfilled the need to give a substance to it. He also refutes all that can stop him from being, “ME”. And he goes round and round in circles coming back to where he started from. “WHERE AM I?” he wonders.

In a jungle comprising sixty animals, what is it that differentiates each one of them? They are all, in the end, animals, isn’t it? What is it that brings them all in the same jungle? -The need to survive and to learn, a common purpose that ties them all together. But is this need so binding upon them all that they should all get bound in a herd, forgetting who they originally are? A herd is made of those who are the same; but while staying together one should not forget what is it that makes him who he really is. A tiger cannot get grouped with a bunch of donkeys and start to brawn. A tiger should not forget let go of his fierceness and vivacity in the bargain of being accepted by his fellow beings. It is true that there should be co-existence but only with the principle of respecting each others individuality.

But conversely, it is a menace if the tiger becomes so full of himself forgetting that there are others who exist with him. The tiger on realizing that he is majestic, all-powerful and strong can become dangerous if he goes on hunting down packs of humans coming to the jungle. It won’t only lead to his death in the end but also of the whole jungle being destroyed in the bet. If the tiger realizing his potentialities stays to himself, not harming anyone unless he is challenged or harmed (which in fact is his true nature), the jungle can survive in peace.

The “I” mentioned before can imply two things- the individuality which defines a person and the ego which a person tends to have on realizing how great he is. The discovery of the “I” is a lifelong process which commences at a stage when we are about to explore our capabilities are use them to the greatest extent. Many of us today are very well aware of who we are. We at times lose this essence of “I” in the bet of mingling with our lot. And at times we become so full of this “I, ME AND MYSELF” that we tend to forget that others do exist and that there are those better than us.

Self discovery is easy- we will end up in ourselves because this whole world is indeed the essence of us. But just realization is not enough. It is exercising and honing of those potentialities; the process of being able to touch the world and be humbled that makes us truly, “ME”- someone capable of being himself yet coexist in harmony.
